Meeks Leads Volleyball Over Tusculum With Career-High 28 Kills
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Senior Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) tallied a career-high 28 kills, while collecting 10 digs and a .431 attack percentage to lead visiting Catawba to a four-set win over Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena. The Catawba Indians improve to 16-6 overall and 10-4 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 26-24, 11-25, 25-21 and 26-24. The Pioneers fall to 15-9 and 8-6.
Setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) recorded a double-double with 52 assists and 13 digs, while Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) finished with a dozen kills and six digs as Catawba records their fourth consecutive victory.
Tusculum juniors Sam Underwood and Bailee Price picked up 13 kills each, while rookie Megan Hasse accounted for 10 kills and three blocks. Sophomore setter Ashley Sarmiento dished out 45 assists and seven digs, while Taylor Boone and Kassie Voelker added eight and seven kills, respectively.
In the first set, Tusculum had a pair of three-point leads, including 17-14 following a Price kill and a Catawba ball handling error. The Indians answered with a 5-2 run to take the lead at 19-18 thanks to a kills by Meeks. With the score tied at 21-21, Tusculum got kills from Voelker and Hasse to take a 23-22 advantage. After a Catawba timeout, the Indians posted a 4-2 spurt, including two kills from Meeks and a Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) kill on set point as Catawba prevailed 26-24. In the frame, Catawba hit a sizzling .350, including Meeks' .571 hitting percentage as she tallied eight kills in her 14 attempts with zero errors.
The Pioneers barreled out of the gate in the second set scoring the first four points in leading wire-to-wire in a 25-11 win. Tusculum boasted a .625 team attack percentage (15-0-24) as Price tallied four kills in her five attempts (.800) with zero errors. Tusculum also accounted for four blocks in the frame, while limiting Catawba to hit minus .067 in the set.
For Catawba in the third set, Meeks accounted for 10 kills and hit .692 as the Indians won the frame 25-21. With the score tied 16-16, Catawba went on a 5-1 run to lead 21-17 following a kill by Whitmer and back-to-back TC attack errors. Tusculum trimmed the deficit to 22-19 on a kills by Hasse, but after a Catawba timeout, the visitors finished the set scoring three of the next five points, all coming on kills by Meeks.
In the fourth set, Tusculum used an early 8-2 run to take a 12-6 advantage. But with the Pioneers leading 20-15, Catawba put up a furious charge with an 8-2 spurt of its own as the Indians led 23-22. Meeks got the tying point on a kill then put Catawba on top on a combo block with Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS). Tusculum would tie the set at 24-24, but Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) would cap the Catawba rally with back-to-back kills to win the stanza 26-24 and seal the victory.
Richardson added eight kills for Catawba, while Doss had seven and two blocks. Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) registered 25 digs and served a pair of aces. Tusculum finished the day hitting .291, while Catawba posted a .259 attack percentage and a sparking .342 in the three winning sets.
