Raye's Triple-Double Send Volleyball Past Lenoir-Rhyne
HICKORY, NC -- Setter Jordan Raye delivered a triple-double of 10 kills, 12 digs and 38 assists to help Catawba to a four-set win over host Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Shuford Gym. The Catawba Indians, tied for second in the SAC, improve to 17-6 overall and 11-4 in the league with the 20-25, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-18 win. The Bears fall to 17-11 and 8-7.
Many of Raye’s sets went to Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) and Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS), who combined for 31 kills. Meeks had 16 kills and 11 digs, while Whitmer followed with 15 kills and dug up 16 balls.
Catawba rallied to take the key third set and rolled on in the fourth to win the match. Catawba fell behind 18-12 in the third, but consecutive kills from Raye and an ace by Meeks started bringing the Lady Indians back. A kill by Whiney Brinkley gave the Bears a 20-17 lead then Catawba reeled off the final eight points. Raye, Meeks and Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) had kills to tie the set and Raye served an ace for a 21-20 lead. Whitmer killed off the set point.
A combo block from Raye and Doss lifted Catawba to a 6-2 lead early in set four. A kill from Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) was followed by a pair of attack errors on LR as Catawba pulled ahead 14-7. Brooke Christenbury got the Bears within 17-14, but Catawba rolled from there. Raye had two blocks in a run that pushed the lead to 23-16 then Whitmer killed off the match.
Raye added three blocks and three aces to her triple-double. Richardson and Doss each collected eight kills, while libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) registered 38 digs.
Lenoir-Rhyne pulled away late to take the opening set. A four-point run with the score tied at 18-all proved to be the key. Joanna Whitmire had two kills in the run and another to up the margin to 23-19.
Catawba battled back to even things at a set apiece. Two kills from Meeks gave the Lady Indians a 20-16 edge, but three straight kills from Christenbury had the Bears within 22-21. Whitmer had a kill then a Bear error gave Catawba a 24-21 edge. Raye would kill the final point.
Christenbury led Lenoir-Rhyne with 15 kills and 14 digs, while Brinkley added nine kills and 12 digs in the losing effort. Kaitlyn Burton tallied a double-double as well for the Bears - 16 assists and 10 digs - but L-R lost for the first time in six league contests.
