Football Falls at North Greenville 25-7
TIGERVILLE, SC – North Greenville grabbed a 25-7 win over visiting Catawba in football action on Saturday afternoon at Younts Stadium. The Crusaders improve to 7-2, while the Catawba Indians fall to 2-7.
The Crusaders totaled 328 total yards with 227 coming on the ground. Teryan Rucker picked up 98 yards to lead the way. Willie Korn threw for 101 yards, but completed just 4-of-17 passes. The NGU defense held Catawba to 216 yards.
Jacob Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS/Illinois) threw for 180 yards, completing 25-of-43 passes. Nate Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) had six catches for 59 yards, while Josh Wright (Raeford, NC/Hoke Co. HS/W. Carolina) made six receptions for 39 yards. The Indians ran for only 36 yards.
North Greenville got on the board with just under six minutes left in the first quarter. A 62-yard punt return from Isaiah Johnson set up the Crusaders at the Catawba three. Idris Anderson scored from a yard out on second down to give NGU a 7-0 lead at the 5:40 mark.
Charest hit passes of 12 and 17 yards to Eric Morman (Rockingham, NC/Richmond Senior HS) and later a 19-yard strike to Mario Washington (High Point, NC/Ragsdale HS) to help Catawba into scoring range on the ensuing possession, but Thomas Trexler (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS) misfired from 25-yards away late in the quarter. Catawba had another scoring change after the Indians recovered a Crusader fumble at the NGU 34, but the Tribe was unable to advance the ball.
A big third-down play late in the half that covered 54 yards from Korn to Sean Wright helped set up the next NGU score. Justin Gravely converted a 35-yard field with 3:09 left which gave North Greenville a 10-0 lead at the break.
The Crusaders kept Catawba bottled up in the third quarter with a pair of punts downed inside the five-yard-line. The only points of the frame came on a safety when Catawba had a bad snap into the end zone. A bad punt late in the quarter led to an early fourth quarter score by the Crusaders. Taking over on the Catawba 16, NGU tacked on a 29-yard field goal by Gravely for a 15-0 lead with 14 minutes left.
North Greenville put the game away with ten minutes left on a three-yard run by Anderson with 10:33 remaining. Catawba used a 31-yard pass play from the Charest brothers to set up a five-yard scoring run by Bobby Morrison (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) with 3:41 to go. The score extended Catawba’s streak of scoring to 196 games, the sixth longest in NCAA Division II.
Lakeem Perry (Louisburg, NC/Louisburg HS) had 10 tackles for Catawba. CJ Barksdale (Simpsonville, SC/Hillcrest HS) was in on three tackles for losses, including a sack. Jason Taylor (Bahama, NC/Northern HS) had two stops for losses, a sack, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.
