Women's Soccer Season Ends with SAC Tourney Loss to Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- On the strength of an early goal and a strong second half, Wingate knocked Catawba out of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament with a 4-1 decision Wednesday night at the Wingate University Soccer Complex. Catawba completes the 2011 season with an overall record of 6-11. The Bulldogs better their mark to 14-3.
The Bulldogs wasted little time getting on the score sheet in the fourth minute when Jade Montgomery knocked in a Kelly Adams miss from close range for the quick 1-0 lead.
Wingate put the game away midway through the second half in a stretch where it scored three goals in eight minutes. Montgomery tallied two more to earn a hat trick while Isabella Miranda added a score in the 69th minute.
The Lady Indians put one past Bulldog goalkeeper Miriam Boucher in the 88th minute when Juliana Conte (Hampton, ONT, CANADA/Holy Trinity Catholic HS) knocked in a rebound from an Amy Iwanicki (Calgary, ALB, CANADA/St. Francis HS) shot for the 4-1 result.
Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) was busy in net with six saves while facing 10 Bulldog shots on goal.
Second-seeded Wingate moves on to face #3 Newberry, a 4-0 winner over #6 Lincoln Memorial, in a SAC Tournament semifinal Friday, Nov. 4 at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, SC.
