Volleyball Gets Past Newberry in Five; Raye Posts Another Triple-Double

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba pulled out a five-set win over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym.  The Catawba Indians got a triple-double from setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) and 20 kills from Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) to improve to 20-6 overall and 13-4 in the SAC.  Catawba won by the scores of 25-21, 25-23, 12-25, 26-28 and 15-12.  The Wolves fall to 15-13 and 7-10.

Raye collected her fourth triple-double of the season and the second in four matches as she recorded a career-best 14 kills to go along with 16 digs and 52 assists.  Meeks posted 20 kills, while Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) added 18 kills and 18 digs.  Raye also served up a pair of aces as did Whitmer and Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS).

Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, IN) led Newberry with 21 kills, 19 digs and two aces.  Samantha Parrish (Angola, IN) added 16 kills and 13 digs, while Jessica King (Los Angeles, CA) collected 14 kills and had three blocks.  Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, SC) served up three aces, while Blair Browning (New Lexington, OH) handed out 62 assists with 15 digs.

Catawba scored five straight points late in the fifth set to secure the win.  Down 10-9, a kill from Whitmer tied the set then the junior served four straight points which came on a kill from Meeks, a combo block from Savannah Tomlinson (Rensenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach HS/UNCG) and Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS), a kill from Tomlinson and a kill from Doss.  Newberry had a pair of blocks to cut the lead to 14-12 before Tomlinson killed off the match point.

Four of the five sets were tight throughout.  Catawba used a late run to take the opening set.  Leading 17-16, Meeks and Whitmer had kills to help the Lady Indians out to a 20-16 edge.  Newberry clawed back and cut the margin to 22-21 on a kill from Parrish.  Whitmer then delivered a kill that was followed by a combo block from Meeks and Doss.  Whitmer served up an ace to end the set.

The second set went back and forth with the teams separated by more the two points only once when Catawba led early at 7-3.  Hollingsworth served a pair of aces and Prachar added a kill to end a four-point spurt that tied the set.  Tied at 23-23, Meeks produced a kill then Newberry had an attack error to give the Lady Indians a two-set edge.

Newberry dominated the third set, hitting at 44% to just 3% for the Lady Indians.  The Wolves ran off the first four points and pushed the lead to 10-3 following a block from King and Parrish.  A kill by King later in the set put Newberry up 20-10 and Parrish would kill off the set point.

Newberry had another quick start in set four, jumping out to a 5-1 lead.  Catawba battled back and took a 10-9 lead following a kill from Tomlinson.  A kill from Prachar capped a four-point Newberry run to give the Wolves a 20-16 edge.  Catawba came right back and tied the set at 22-all on consecutive kills from Whitmer.

An ace from Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) gave the Lady Indians a match point at 25-24, but a serve error erased it.  King and Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, CA) combined on a block to push Newberry up 26-25, but Meeks killed off the set point to pull Catawba even.  King and Prachar then had kills to force the final set.
