Comeback Falls Short in Men's Basketball Loss to Limestone
SALISBURY, NC -- Charles Blue’s 26 points and 17 rebounds helped Limestone thwart a Catawba rally in a 74-69 defeat of the Indians Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. With the non-conference loss the Indians drop to 3-5 overall, as the Saints improve to 6-4.
Freshman Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) had strong game with 18 points and 13 rebounds to add another double-double to his young resume. Keon Moore (Colerain, NC/Bertie HS) backed him up with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N.Surry HS/Hargrave) contributed nine points for the Indians, all on three-pointers.
Down just one at 64-63 with 4:26 remaining in the game, the Indians missed seven free-throws in a row to allow Limestone to get out of Goodman Gym with the win. Catawba got within one on two separate occasions in the final 1:17 on three-pointers by Moore and Martin, but Blue hit a jumper and was 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in the same time span to lock up the game for the Saints.
Catawba faced a 58-47 deficit with 10:46 left when it went on a 15-6 run over the next five minutes to make it interesting. Little banged around in the paint making a tip-in and a short jumper as the Indian guards repeatedly fed him the ball near the basket.
Justin Huntley (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) had success off the dribble-drive making a three-point play to cut it to 60-56. Chris Watson (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville HS) drained a three-pointer and Martin followed suit with another to tie it at 62 with 6:29 on the clock.
Phillip Moultrie made a running layup to break the tie as Limestone never looked back giving the ball to Blue down the stretch and watching the Indians shoot 2-for-11 from the line in the second half and 20% for the game.
The contest was back-and-forth in the first half with Little, Willie Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC/Trinity Christian) and Stuart Thomson (Poynton, ENGLAND/Poynton HS) all making two field-goals apiece while tying it at 18-18 with 8:47 remaining. The Saints found their outside shot making five three-pointers, two by Marquis Sloan, to close the half with a 25-14 jaunt.
Moultrie added 14 points while Sloan netted 12 on 3-for-4 shooting from long range for Limestone.
The Indians have several days off before they play again at Belmont Abbey on Friday, December 16 at 5:00 pm.
