Women's Basketball Surprises Wingate as Win Streak Hits Five
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba College picked up an important South Atlantic Conference road win 66-59 over the Wingate Bulldogs at Cuddy Arena. With the win the Lady Indians improve to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs drop to 7-4 and 1-2.
Maggie Sullivan (Fort Mill, SC/Charlotte Christian HS) stroked a jumper with 2:42 remaining, while the Lady Indians hit five-of-eight from the charity stripe to hold off the Bulldogs. Cold-shooting from the field did Wingate in as it made 33% of its total shots and just three three-pointers for the entire game.
After being up by as many as 10 early in the second half, the Lady Indians had to weather the Bulldog storm they knew was coming. Kelli Bonner and Sarah Wollett both canned long-range shots to dwindle the Catawba lead, and then Sarah Burnick made a jumper that put Wingate ahead 47-46 at the 9:36 mark.
Catawba’s Sullivan and Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day HS) would come up big making two baskets apiece down the stretch as the Bulldogs went nearly four minutes without scoring and made just four more baskets to close out the game.
Sullivan did all of her damage in the second half going 4-for-4 from the field with eight points while pulling down three rebounds and one steal. Long led the team in scoring with 22 points while dishing out three assists.
The Lady Indians jumped out to a big lead on the Bulldogs in the first half thanks to Chloe Bully’s (Hannut, BELGIUM/Namur HS) hot shooting. She hit her third three of the half on an assist from Mallary Clay (Lansing, NC/Ashe County HS) at the 7:40 mark to put Catawba up 20-10.
Wingate struggled from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes going 0-for-6, allowing Catawba to go on a mini-run of 8-2 and surge ahead 26-13 with just over two minutes to go. Before Brooklyn Boston hit a jumper at the 1:44 mark, Wingate had gone over eight minutes without a field goal.
Long closed the half with a short jumper and two free throws to make the halftime score 28-20.
Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day HS) had her typical double-double performance with 15 points and 17 boards. Bully finished with 19 points, going four-for-six from three-point range.
Catawba plays again Saturday afternoon at home against the Anderson Trojans at 2 pm.
