Men's Basketball Squanders Rally in Loss at Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half to lead by six, but host Wingate ended the game on a 13-1 run to take a 77-69 win in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 3-8 and 0-3.
Wingate controlled the opening half, out-shooting the Indians 42% to 27% in leading 31-23 at the break. An 8-0 run that was capped by consecutive three-pointers by Paidrick Matilus help the Bulldogs to a 23-14 lead at the 8:24 mark of the half. A jumper by Jeffrey Parker upped the margin to 31-18 before a basket by Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) and a three-pointer by Keon Moore (Colerain, NC/Bertie HS) reduced the margin to eight at the break.
The Indians again went down by 13 at 39-26 with 18:05 remaining before mounting a 32-13 run over the next ten minutes to go on top by six. Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) got Catawba going. He made a three-pointer, hit three free throws and canned another from behind the arc to put the Indians up 43-41 at the 14:34 mark to cap a 17-2 run.
Catawba kept its lead into the final minutes. Cameron Lovelace (Cherryville, NC/Cherryville HS/N. Florida) gave the Indians a 63-58 edge with 6:30 to go and Martin made it 68-64 on the last of his four three-pointers at the 3:47 mark. That however would be the last field goal by Catawba on the night.
Matilus drained a three-pointer for Wingate and when Jaime Vaughn connected from long range the Bulldogs were back on top at 70-69 with 2:04 left. Catawba could not answer, misfiring on its final five shots.
Martin hit on 6-of-12 shots with the four three-pointers to lead Catawba with 20 points. He added seven rebounds. Willie Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC/Trinity Christian) added 14 points with Justin Huntley (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) collecting 12 points and handing out nine assists.
Matilus canned all four of his three-point attempts in leading all scorers with 22 points for the Bulldogs. Odell Turner delivered 11 points and blocked three shots. Vaughn tallied 10 points, while Deion Turman posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Wingate shot 47% for the game to just 36% for the Indians. The Bulldogs also held a 50-26 edge on the boards. Catawba committed just five turnovers, but did not help its cause with a 12-for-24 performance at the line.
