Women's Basketball Holds on Late in Defeat of Anderson
SALISBURY, NC -- A stellar night from three-point land keyed a 70-67 South Atlantic Conference victory for Catawba over the Anderson Trojans at Goodman Gym on Saturday afternoon. With their sixth consecutive win, the Lady Indians up their record to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 5-7 and 2-2.
Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day HS) and Mallary Clay (Lansing, NC/Ashe County HS) each sunk a pair of free throws in the last minute to protect the lead and eventually the game. Going 5-for-5 from behind the arc in the second half helped the Lady Indian’s cause as well.
Behind three with five seconds remaining Anderson guard Alissa Diaz drove down court looking for the tying three-point shot, but dribbled the ball off her foot and out of bounds locking up the win for Catawba.
After Clay knocked down a triple at the 5:54 mark to make it 60-49, Anderson went on a 10-4 run with the help of full-court pressure to get back into the game. The Trojans converted three Catawba turnovers into made layups or short jumpers.
Sierra Simpson with eight points, nine rebounds and five steals led the Anderson charge with a steal and layup off an Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) inbounds pass with just over five minutes remaining.
Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/Namur HS) made a layup and a jumper while Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day HS) had a layup of her own during Anderson’s run to keep Catawba out front.
The Trojan’s Amanda Parris canned a trey with :15 left to trim the deficit to one at 68-67, but that would be as close as Anderson would get as the Lady Indians got it done from the charity stripe.
Catawba led the majority of the first half and 32-29 at the break, as Bully (15 points, five assists) and Long (17 points, seven assists) went a combined 5-8 from three-point range. A jumper by Hicks (16 points, nine rebounds) at 13:49 gave the Lady Indians their largest lead of the half at 17-11.
The Lady Indians shot 73% from long range for the game compared to just 25% for the Trojans. Catawba held the rebounding edge 37-32, while Anderson outscored its opponent 20-10 in the paint.
Catawba hits the road on Wednesday, January 11 for a SAC game versus the Brevard Tornados at 6 pm.
