Volleyball stays a game back with two SAC wins

Catawba College picked up a pair of wins in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action, defeated Mars Hill in four games on Friday night and sweeping Lenoir-Rhyne in three games on Saturday afternoon. Catawba improves to 16-6 overall and 7-1 in the SAC with the two wins. On Friday, Catawba dropped the opening game, then roared back to take the next three. Game scores were as follows: (27-30, 30-20, 30-25, 30-28). Senior Kristen Shipley (Kingsport, TN) led Mars Hill with 21 kills and 22 digs. Sophomore Sarah Nash (Louisville, KY) recorded 11 kills and 17 digs. Junior Vicki Vaughan (Kingsport, TN) paced the team with 40 assists in the match. Senior Missy Gibson (Franklin, NC) and Vaughan had five blocks each. Sophomore Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) and junior Erin Naumann (Cave Creek, AZ) led Catawba. Harrison had 19 kills and Naumann posted 38 digs. Against Lenoir-Rhyne, sophomore Crystal Bonner (Yadkinville, NC) totaled seven aces and as a team the Lady Indians tallied 13 to stifle the Bears. Catawba won 30-27, 30-9 and 30-26. In the game two win, Catawba scored 21 service points and blitzed the Bears. Sophomore Hope Miller (Newton, NC) led the Lady Indians with 14 kills, and senior Lettie Wilkes (Williamsport, MD) had a team-high 19 assists. On the defensive side, Junior Erin Naumann (Cave Creek, AZ) contributed with 17 digs, while sophomores Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) and Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) and had four blocks each. For L-R, senior Loraine Clausnitzer, freshman Leslie Hinkle, and sophomore Rebekah Steinlin all had 10 kills. Clausnitzer also led L-R with 21 digs and one ace. Freshman Jennifer Blackwell led the Bears with 32 assists, and the Bears libero, sophomore Brandi Rickert totaled 16 digs. #####
