BREVARD, NC -- Catawba kept on rolling right along in the South Atlantic Conference with a 62-54 triumph over Brevard at Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday night. The Lady Indians improve to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the SAC as their win streak hits seven. The Tornados drop to 5-7 and 0-5.

Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) converted a layup off an assist from Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day HS) with 2:10 remaining that put Catawba up 60-52 and secured the victory. Brevard couldn’t get shots to fall as it missed three of its last four and had to resort to fouling.

Long showed the way with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists while Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/Namur HS) chipped in with 16 points going 4-for-5 from behind the arc.

Catawba’s largest lead of the game at 56-47 came at 7:16 in the second stanza after Merritt assisted on a Bully layup. Despite their struggles from the field, 35% shooting for the game, the Tornados came within four at 56-52 on baskets by Tempestt Mack and Anna Schlobohm, but came no closer the rest of the way.

Schlobohm nailed a three-pointer out of halftime to get Brevard within two at 35-33, but Merritt had a three of her own and a layup to keep the Tornados at arm’s length.

The Lady Indians went into the locker room at halftime with a 35-30 advantage due to 67% on 6-of-9 shooting from three-point land and turning six Brevard turnovers into 10 points.

Long hit a three on an assist by Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) at the 9:26 mark to give Catawba its largest first-half lead at 21-14. The Tornados battled back to within one at 29-28 on an Asheley Watkins layup, but Bully countered from downtown to help pad the lead at intermission.

The Lady Indians found themselves down early at 8-4 on a Lindsay Brindle layup, but answered with a 7-0 spurt highlighted by one of Bully’s four first-half treys and a Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day HS) jumper. Hicks brought down 13 rebounds while scoring six.

Catawba stays on its SAC road trip for a visit to Tusculum on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2pm.
