Men's Basketball Stops Losing Skid With 64-56 Victory at Brevard
BREVARD, NC -- Catawba claimed a 64-56 win over host Brevard in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Boshamer Gym. The win is the first for the Catawba Indians in the league as they improve to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the SAC. It also snaps a seven-game losing streak. The Tornados fall to 2-12 and 1-4.
The Indians placed four players in double figures, led by freshman Willie Gilmore's (Fayetteville, NC/Trinity Christian) 13 points. Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) and Justin Huntley (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) each tossed in a dozen, while Cameron Lovelace (Cherryville, NC/Cherryville HS/N. Florida) added 10 points. Little also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked six shots.
Four quick points from Lovelace had Catawba up early at 8-2, but the Tornados would rally and grab a 17-12 edge on a basket by Darius Moose midway through the opening half. The Indians spurted at the end of the half as they turned a four-point deficit into a 35-31 lead with an 8-0 run over the final three and half minutes.
Brevard never retook the lead, but did tie the game twice. Gilmore put Catawba up for good with 9:57 left and Little followed with two straight buckets to give the Indians a 55-49 edge. Catawba held at least a four point lead the rest of the way.
Catawba shot 48% for the contest, while the Tornados canned only 35%. The Indians also held a 38-34 edge on the boards. Jermichael Tanner led Brevard with 15 points, while Moose added 14 points and eight rebounds.
