Tusculum Flies by Women's Basketball, Ends Win Streak
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Kendal Baxter poured in 15 points as she helped power Tusculum past Catawba for a 63-42 South Atlantic Conference victory at Pioneer Arena on Saturday afternoon. The loss ended a seven-game win streak for the Lady Indians and dropped them to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the SAC while the Pioneers bettered their record to 10-4 and 4-3.
Tusculum took a seven-point halftime lead and slowly expanded it throughout the second half on long-range shooting from Baxter which was 3-for-6 from three-point land.
The Pioneers committed 30 turnovers but that didn’t seem to matter as Catawba couldn’t get its shooting in order going 17-for-61 for the game from the field.
Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day HS), which led the team with 11 points and three assists, scored a basket with 4:23 remaining to cut it to 50-40. The Lady Indians would not score again until Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) made a jumper with just under minute to go and Tusculum leading by 19.
The three-point shot that had helped Catawba in the past two games went away against the Pioneers as the Lady Indians shot a paltry 6.3% from behind the arc.
Tusculum jumped out to a 12-3 lead with a three-pointer by Jama Hammontree seven minutes in and eventually stretched it to 20-8 on a layup by Alexis Anderson.
Catawba responded with a 10-2 run and got within four at 22-18 on a Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/Namur HS) layup with 4:32 to go in the half. The Pioneers answered with three short-ranged field goals to make it 29-22 at the break.
Santana Morrison (Statesville, NC/N. Iredell HS) came off the bench and provided a spark with eight points and five rebounds for Catawba.
The Lady Indians were without their double-double producer Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day HS) due to a knee injury.
Catawba next hosts Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 6pm.
