Women's Basketball Fends Off Late Rally to Top Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College held off a Lenoir-Rhyne comeback to pull out a 64-59 South Atlantic Conference victory at Goodman Gym Wednesday night. With the loss the Bears fall to 12-4 overall and 4-3 in the SAC as the Lady Indians move their record to 10-5 and 5-2.
Despite shooting just 18% in the second half and outrebounded 66-50 for the game, Catawba managed to cling to an ever-shrinking lead in the last ten minutes to claim the conference win.
Behind 52-33 after a Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/Namur HS) three-pointer with 9:44 left, Lenoir-Rhyne mounted a slow, methodical comeback. The Bears only shot 24% in the second half but it was enough to catch up to the Lady Indians who sunk only five field goals themselves in the half.
Lenoir-Rhyne started its full-court press and forced Catawba into some hasty turnovers which led to quick layups for the Bears. A jumper by Lenoir-Rhyne’s Taylor Johnson at the 3:46 mark made it 58-50.
The last Lady Indian basket would come with 5:52 remaining on a jumper by Jolysa Connor (Charlotte, NC/E.E. Waddell HS) but Catawba produced just enough offense through made free throws down the stretch to polish off the Bears.
Catawba shot a sub-par 15-for-26 from the line for the contest but Nisha Long’s (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day HS) pair with six seconds to go were the two that mattered most. Lenoir-Rhyne didn’t fare much better from the charity stripe, making 15-of-27.
The Lady Indians had a commanding 41-23 lead at the break thanks to hot shooting from Bully and the opposite from Lenoir-Rhyne, hitting only ten shots overall and one from behind the arc. Bully led Catawba with 18 points and four three-pointers.
Two three-pointers and a mid-range jumper by Bully helped put Catawba up 10-0 just three-and-a-half minutes in. Bully’s layup off a Long steal at the 6:24 mark had the Lady Indians up 31-8 as Catawba continued to capitalize off 10 first-half Bear turnovers.
A layup by the Bear’s Cameron Sealey with 1:43 remaining cut the deficit to 17 at 35-18. Catawba responded with baskets by Long and Jolysa Connor (Charlotte, NC/E.E. Waddell HS) that would put the Lady Indians up 20 before a last-second Alexis Katt layup off an inbounds pass ended the half.
Long contributed 16 points and four assists on the night while Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day HS) came back from injury and pulled down 14 rebounds and netted 10 points.
Whitley Culler led Lenoir-Rhyne with 17 points as teammate Jazmine Charles had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Culler also had nine rebounds.
The Lady Indians continue in SAC play at home against Newberry on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 2 pm.
