Willis sets new Cross Country mark at NC Championships

GREENVILLE, NC Ė Catawba freshman Ryan Willis (Jonesboro, GA) shattered the school 8k record as the menís cross country team finished second at the North Carolina Collegiate Cross County Championships held on Saturday morning at Lake Kristi. The women, led once again by freshman Carol Marquis (Medina, OH), placed third at the meet. Willis ran a time of 25:18, breaking the old mark set by teammate Jesse Howes (Huntington, MA) of 26:50 established last year at Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury, NC. The time placed Willis second overall at the meet behind UNC-Pembrokeís Mike Jimenez, who ran a time of 25:07. Howes was fourth at the meet and also bested the old mark, running a time of 26:19 this morning. Marquis was just seven seconds off the womenís 5k mark as she posted a time of 20:09 to finish in fifth place. The current record of 20:02 is held by Amber Rady, who set the time in 1999 at a meet in Hickory, NC. Rebecca DeFeo (Cape May Courthouse, NJ) was eighth, running a time of 20:40.
