Women's Basketball Edges Newberry on Late Surge
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba came away with a closely contested 58-53 South Atlantic Conference win over Newberry at Goodman Gym Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Lady Indians to 11-5 overall and 6-2 in the SAC. The Wolves drop to 10-6 and 5-3.
With :14 remaining and the Lady Indians ahead 54-53, Maggie Sullivan (Fort Mill, SC/Charlotte Christian HS) found an opening in the Newberry defense, drove to the basket and laid it in to give Catawba some breathing room.
Newberry hurried down the hardwood to try and tie the game with a three but missed and Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day HS) ended up with the ball and was fouled. Long calmly knocked down both free throws to put the game out of reach.
Usually strong from behind the arc, the Lady Indians struggled from long range going 1-for-15. The Wolves made 4-of-11 three-pointers.
The game was tight the entire time with no team leading by more than six points. The score was tied eight times with four lead changes.
Newberry took the lead at 50-47 with 5:28 to go on a three-pointer by Niecey Lewis. Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day HS) was fouled while making a jumper and tied it at 50 with the free throw. Hicks led Catawba with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The Wolves’ lead of 51-50 at the 3:58 mark would be their last as the Lady Indians forced Newberry into four turnovers during that stretch. Hicks canned a jumper with 2:50 to go that put Catawba up for good at 52-51.
The first half was punch, counter-punch as each team responded to the other’s mini-run. Catawba went ahead 21-15 on a shot by Hicks, and a three-pointer by Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/Namur HS) before that.
Newberry came right back with a layup by Devanee Taylor and a trey by Lewis to get within one at 21-20 with 9:40 remaining in the half.
Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) and Taylor May (China Grove, NC/S. Rowan HS) hit shots near the end of the half to give the Lady Indians a 30-28 halftime advantage.
Long contributed 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the winning effort.
Catawba next travels to Mars Hill for a SAC contest on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 6 pm.
