Baseball Drops Opener to Belmont Abbey

SALISBURY, NC -- Belmont Abbey used four home runs to double-up host Catawba 14-7 in baseball action on Friday afternoon at Newman Park.  The Crusaders improve to 2-0, while the 18th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 0-1.

The Crusaders trailed 2-0 after three innings, but a three-run homer by Emilio Pagan (Simpsonville, SC) erased the deficit in the top of the fourth, putting Belmont Abbey up 4-2.  Catawba cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning, but Justin Vasquez (Palm City, FL) answered that with a two-run homer in the fifth for a 6-3 edge.

Belmont Abbey erupted for seven runs in the sixth to blow the game open.  Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, NC) started things with a three-run shot.  He added a second home run, a solo one, in the seventh.

James White (Huntington, WV) got the win in relief for the Crusaders.  He entered the game in the fifth with the Crusaders leading 6-3 and two runners on base.  He retired both batters to end the Catawba threat.  Patrick Rossi (Cary, NC/Cary HS) tossed the final three innings to earn a save.

Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) led Catawba as he went 3-for-5, with a homer, and drove in four.  Freshman Garrett Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) got the Indians on the board first with a rare inside the park home run at Newman Park in the second.  Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) had a solo home run in the third.

Vasquez went 3-for5 for the Crusaders.  Pagan and Mullis each drove in four runs with a pair of hits.  Rossi posted six strikeouts and allowed only one hit over his three frames.  White whiffed four in an inning and two-thirds.

Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) got the start for Catawba.  He surrendered six funs off seven hits in five innings while striking out six.  Bostian and Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) each had two hits for the Indians.
