Women's Basketball Blows by Poor-Shooting Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College led most of game and coasted to a 62-42 South Atlantic Conference victory over Brevard Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians better their record to 15-6 overall and 10-3 in the SAC, while the Tornados drop to 5-16 and 0-13.
Already with a nine-point lead at halftime, Catawba capitalized on Brevard’s inability to make shots, 26% for the game, to pull away. With the low shooting percentage came a lot of rebounds which the Lady Indians scooped up the majority of for a 64-33 rebounding advantage that led to 23 second-chance points and 34 points in the paint.
Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day HS) skied for 16 rebounds and knocked home 13 points while Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day HS) and Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/Namur HS) each deposited 15 points for the Lady Indians.
Catawba got out in transition against the slower Tornados off of long rebounds and steals such as when Quaneasia Coleman (Duluth, GA/Northview HS) picked tempest Mack’s pocket and fed it up-court to Long for the easy layup and a commanding 46-25 lead.
The Lady Indians achieved their largest cushion of the night of 25 with 6:43 remaining on a three-pointer from Long for a 52-27 advantage.
Catawba had a 25-16 advantage at the break despite only shooting 28% meanwhile holding Brevard to 25% and out-rebuilding the Tornados 31-16.
Ahead 14-13 at the 5:08 mark, Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) made two three-point shots to help the Lady Indians go on an 11-3 run to close to the half.
The Lady Indians led early 6-0 on baskets by Bully and Hicks, but the Tornados came back to go ahead 9-8 on a layup and jumper from Anna Schlobohm.
Lindsey Brindle led Brevard with 14 points and nine rebounds.
With the win and a 73-67 Tusculum loss to Carson-Newman, the Lady Indians take back sole control of first place in the SAC by one game over the Pioneers.
The Lady Indians travel to Anderson to play a SAC game against the Trojans on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 pm.
