Baseball Takes League Opener Against Mars Hill
Brooks hit for just the fourth known cycle in school history
SALISBURY, NC -- Senior JJ Jankowski (McMurray, PA/Peters Township/Miami,OH) improved to 3-0, while freshman Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) hit for just the fourth known cycle in school history as Catawba defeated visiting Mars Hill 15-3 to open South Atlantic Conference baseball play on Friday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 7-2, while the Lions fall to 2-7.
Brooks went 4-for-6 to help pace the Indian offense. He tripled in a run in a five-run second, led off the third inning with a home run, doubled in the seventh and singled in the eighth to complete the rare feat. Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) also homered for Catawba and drove in five runs, while Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) had three hits and three RBI.
The 15-run, 16-hit outburst was more than enough support for Jankowski. He worked seven innings, allowing just one run off five his with no walks and 11 strikeouts. He has now fanned 28 in 21 innings of work this season.
Furr capped Catawba’s five-run first with a two-run single then added a three-run homer in the fifth as the Indians extended the lead to 13-1. In addition to the 16 hits, Catawba also drew 11 walks from Lion pitchers.
Coty Pate (Knoxville, TN) had three hits for Mars Hill and connected on a two-run homer in the ninth. Joey Belviso (Pembroke Pines, FL) had a pair of hits for the Lions and Matt Mayo (Enfield, CT) picked up an RBI single in the fourth.
