Tusculum Shoots Its Way Past Women's Basketball
SALISBURY, NC -- Hot-shooting Tusculum came out of the gate on fire and ended a three-game skid with a 76-60 South Atlantic Conference triumph over against Catawba Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Pioneers improve to 16-8 overall and 10-6 in the SAC as the Lady Indians slide to 16-8 and 11-5.
Tusculum shot 63% from the field in the first half including 7-of-12 from long range to quickly outdistance itself from the struggling Lady Indians who only managed to make eight field goals of their own in the opening segment.
The Pioneers’ first three shots were all three pointers, two by Kendal Baxter and one by Linda Aughburns, which they made to set the early trend.
Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day HS) and Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/Namur HS) made Catawba’s first two baskets of the game and then didn’t register another one for almost six minutes. Tusculum continued canning threes and before the Lady Indians could gasp for air they were down 22-4 at the 13:09 mark.
The Pioneer made four more treys and led comfortably 44-21 at the break.
Catawba forced 23 Tusculum turnovers and outscored its opponent 17-9 in second-chance points, but it didn’t much as the Pioneers did not need many second chances from the perimeter. Tusculum finished the game with nine made threes on 56% shooting.
The Pioneers stretched their lead to 57-27 on a jumper by Alishia Mosley midway through the second half for their largest lead of the game. The Lady Indians closed the game on an 18-6 run to make it look respectable.
Hicks led Catawba with 18 points and seven rebounds while Bully added nine points.
Baxter led four Pioneers in double-figures with 20 as Aughburns contributed 15.
