Balanced Scoring Helps Tusculum Past Men's Basketball
SALISBURY, NC -- Justin Steigerwald and Tommy Klempin each netted 11 points while Neal Sparks contributed 10 as Tusculum defeated Catawba 60-50 in a South Atlantic Conference contest Saturday evening at Goodman Gym. The Pioneers improve to 9-15 overall and 6-10 in the SAC as the Indians drop to 7-17 and 4-12.
Tusculum trailed only once and led most of the way en route to the victory. The Pioneers shot 43% on the night which was good enough as they held Catawba to just 36% including 3-of-21 from downtown.
The Pioneers managed their first double-digit lead 11 minutes into the game at 16-6 on a layup by Darius Carter set up by a Steigerwald steal. Catawba cut it to 26-25 on two free throws by Chris Tyree (Rocky Mount, VA/Franklin Co. HS) just before halftime.
Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) put the Indians ahead 27-26 on a jumper out of halftime but it was short-lived as the Pioneers would take it right back and kept on rolling.
Steigerwald canned a trey at the 5:22 mark of the second to give Tusculum a 48-40 advantage. Catawba got within 50-48 on a layup by Willie Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC/Trinity Christian) with 2:35 remaining but the Pioneers countered with one of their own and the Indians had to start fouling.
Tusculum hit all eight of its tries from the charity stripe in the last minute to preserve the victory.
Stuart Thomson (Poynton, ENGLAND/Poynton HS) led Catawba in scoring with 16 points and Keon Moore (Colerain, NC/Bertie HS) added 12 and seven rebounds.
The Indians host Mars Hill on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m.
