Volleyball knocks off league-leading Carson-NewmanSALISBURY, NC – Catawba College defeated visiting Carson-Newman in four games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym, handing the Lady Eagles their first league loss and moving Catawba within a half game of first place. Hope Miller (Newton, NC) posted 16 kills, 20 digs and three aces to lead Catawba to the 21-30, 30-23, 30-27 and 30-24 win. The Lady Indians improve to 17-6 overall and 8-1 in the SAC, while Carson-Newman falls to 22-6 and 9-1. Carson-Newman got three early kills from Jennifer Holmes (Franklin, TN) to jump out to a quick 9-4 edge in the opening game. Catawba would rally within two on several occasions, the last at 19-17 before an ace and a kill by Kendra Rickertson (Pelham, AL) put the Lady Eagles up 24-18. Holmes had six kills in the opening game, while Rickertson had five kills and an ace. Catawba would rally back in game two. The Lady Indians jumped to a 12-7 lead, but responded to cut the deficit to 15-13. An ace by Miller and two kills by Rachel LaRoche (Wilmington, DE) helped pull Catawba out to a 20-13 lead. The Lady Eagles got within 24-19, thanks to a pair of kills by Ashley Adams (Knoxville, TN), but could get no closer. Game three was a war as Miller recorded three kills to stake the Lady Indians to a 7-4 edge only to see Carson-Newman rally back to 10-9 after a kill by Jenna Rust (Lindale, TX). Catawba would not surrender the lead during the game, which featured 12 straight side outs at one point. LaRoche would end that stretch with consecutive kills to put Catawba on top 19-15. The Lady Eagles would claw within a point at 19-18, 20-19 and 24-23, but a kill by Crystal Bonner (Yadkinville, NC) and a combo block by LaRoche and Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) put Catawba back up 27-23. Another kill by Bonner gave the Lady Indians a 29-26 edge and a serve error provided the winning point. Catawba bolted to a 5-1 edge in the deciding game, but Carson-Newman used five straight points to grab a 9-7 edge. The game was even at 14-14 when LaRoche delivered a kill and an ace with Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) adding a kill and block to put the Lady Indians on top 18-14. At 19-18, LaRoche again delivered back-to-back kills in a four-point run for a 23-18 margin. Catawba kept a four-point lead from that point. LaRoche also reached double figures in kills for Catawba with 14, while Harrison had 15 kills and six blocks. Erin Naumann (Cave Creek, AZ) had 38 digs, while Lettie Wilkes (Williamsport, MD) posted 45 assists. Rickertson and Rust paced Carson-Newman with 13 kills apiece, while Melanie Templin (Andersonville, TN) had a dozen. Blaire Young (Morristown, TN) had 24 digs with Rust adding 22.
