Women's Basketball Edges Mars Hill on Senior Night
SALISBURY, NC -- Seniors Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day HS) and Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day HS) were honored before tip-off then helped Catawba to a 62-60 come-from-behind victory over Mars Hills Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 17-8 overall and 12-5 in the SAC while the Lions fall to 12-14 and 5-12.
Long made two free throws with 13 seconds to go to give the Lady Indians its second two-point win over the Lions this season. Long captured 21 points and 10 rebounds for Catawba to go with five assists.
Standing all alone near mid-court with the score knotted at 60, Long held the ball for the last shot as Mars Hill’s Kristen Metcalf approached and promptly fouled the Catawba guard. After a timeout, Long calmly sank both tries from the charity stripe.
Mars Hill struggled to get the shot it wanted off at the end and settled for a Taylor Deal three-pointer that clanked off the left side of the rim and out of bounds as the clock expired.
Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/Namur HS) made 1-of-2 free throws with 44 seconds remaining to tie it at 60. Bully’s three-pointer with two minutes left put Catawba up 59-58 only to see the Lions take it back on a layup by Armeka Booker at 1:23 on the clock. The lead changed hands 11 times and was tied on seven occasions during the game.
After being down 10 at the break, Catawba re-took the lead 45-44 on a Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) trey at the 11:05 mark in the second half as Long found her all alone near the top of the key. The turn-around capped a 21-10 run out of halftime for the Lady Indians.
Catawba jumped out to 15-8 lead in the first half on two three-pointers by Bully and one by Long but Mars Hill answered with a 16-0 run to go ahead 24 -15. The Lady Indians ended up shooting just 28% for the half after their hot start from the field while the Lions used their strong finish to shoot 47%.
Mars Hill scored 10 points off of 10 Lady Indian turnovers in the first half to the Lions’ 2 and outscored Catawba 28-8 in the paint. Mars Hill took a 34-24 lead into the locker room.
Bully finished with 14 points and three assists while Hicks tallied 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Jolysa Connor (Charlotte, NC/E.E. Waddell HS) was the other senior honored as she had nine rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes of action.
Booker scored 17 points and had 15 rebounds for Mars Hill as Tyler Carlson backed her up with 16 points.
