Moore Goes Over 1,000 Career Points as Men's Basketball Qualifies For SAC Tournament
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got 33 points from Keon Moore (Colerain, NC/Bertie HS), who became just the second Catawba player to reach 1,000 career points before his junior season, and defeated visiting Mars Hill 87-77 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 8-17 and 5-12 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 5-21 and 3-14. The win plus Brevard’s loss to Newberry gives the Indians the final berth into the SAC Tournament.
Moore connected on 11-of-16 shots, including 6-of-11 from behind the arc, to go along with five free throws to garner his game-high total. Three Catawba seniors, playing their final home game, also scored in double digits. Justin Huntley (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Stuart Thomson (Poynton, ENGLAND/Poynton HS) added 14, while Cameron Lovelace (Cherryville, NC/Cherryville HS/N. Florida) tallied 10 points.
The Indians never trailed as Moore buried his first two triples to give Catawba a 6-2 edge. The Lions were able to tie the score at six-all, but Thomson canned a three before Huntley scored three straight points to put the Indians up 12-6. Moore later added consecutive three-pointers as Catawba pulled out to a 35-23 margin.
Catawba hit 10 of its 11 three-pointers in the opening half to lead 43-34 at the break. Catawba edged out to a 63-46 lead after eight minutes of the second before Mars Hill cut the deficit to eight with eight minutes left. After Cody King (Enka, NC) hit a three-pointer for the Lions to make the score 74-64 with 5:24 remaining, Catawba went on a 9-1 run to put the issue on ice. Thomson ended the run with dunk following a steal from Moore.
Sammy Emile (Lake Worth, FL) led Mars Hill with 30 points. He had 16 at the break, but did not make a field goal in the second half until a three-pointer with 2:12 left that made the score 87-70. Terrell Harris (Indiantown, FL) added 18 for the Lions.
Two other Catawba seniors also played their final home game. Kelvin Drakeford (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School/Barton) scored five points with three rebounds a pair of assists and two steals.
