Three Home Runs Help Softball to Split of Games at Catawba Inv.
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba split a pair of games on the opening day of the Catawba Invitational Softball Tournament being held at Salisbury Community Park through Sunday. On Friday, the Catawba Indians fell to Kutztown 4-0 then bounced back to knock off Glenville State 8-2. The Lady Indians now stand at 9-5 on the season.
Kutztown benefitted from four Catawba errors to take its win. Samantha Derr held Catawba to just four hits, two coming from Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS). Derr walked none and struck out three.
Two errors led to a pair of runs in the first for Kutztown. The Bears added another unearned run in the fifth got a final run in the sixth. Kelly Fitzgerald singled home the first run of the game for Kutztown. She scored the final run on a sacrifice fly from Brianna Knipe. Fitzgerald had two of the four Kutztown hits.
Trailing Glenville State 1-0, Catawba erupted for four runs in the third and four more in the fourth to take the win. Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) had a two run single then Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) followed with a two-run homer to put Catawba on top 4-1.
Kovalcin added another RBI in the fourth before back-to-back home runs by Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS) and Gibbs pushed the score to 8-1. Morgan Scarpellini homered in the sixth for Glenville State for the final tally.
Emily Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) improved to 5-1 with the win. She allowed a run on three hits over four frames. Selena Ashley (Walkertown, NC/E. Forsyth HS) earned the save. She struck out six over the final three innings and allowed just the round tripper.
Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS), Justice, Gibbs and Casey Baucom (Marshville, NC/Piedmont HS) all had two hits for Catawba.
