Means sets record as Football rolls to 41-7 win over Wingate

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College, ranked 13th in NCAA II, spotted visiting Wingate an early score, then rolled to a 41-7 win on Homecoming in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Salisbury High School’s Ludwig Stadium.  The Indians totaled 508 yards of total offense, while senior Nick Means (Thomasville, NC) set the Catawba record for career receptions as the Indians improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the SAC.  Wingate falls to 4-3 and 1-2.
Wingate took the opening kickoff and marched 74 yards on seven plays, capped by a 39 yard scoring strike from Stuart Card (Red Oak, VA) to Rodney Williams (Lake Wales, FL).  The duo also connected for a 21-yard play earlier in the drive.  After failing to get a first down on its initial possession, Catawba would tie the game later in the quarter on a 40-yard pass from Luke Samples (Elkin, NC) to Means.  The score would remain 7-7 through the first quarter, but on its initial drive of the second period, Catawba would take the lead for good.

A 22-yard pass from Samples to Preston Lewis (Mt. Airy, NC) was followed by 1 29-yard run by Samples to the Wingate 11.  Samples would later plunge in from the one for a 14-7 lead with 10:56 left in the half.  An 8-yard touchdown pass to Mario Crowe (Charlotte, NC) gave the Indians a 21-7 edge at the 4:22 mark and the Tribe marched for a 26-yard field goal on the final play of the half for a 24-7 lead at the break.

Catawba added a 22-yard field goal from Allan Rohrbaugh (Lexington, NC) to open the final half and Means and Samples would strike again in the fourth, this time from three yards out for a 34-7 lead.  Catawba capped the scoring on a nine-yard run by Jonathan Leach (Mt. Olive, NC), which was set up by a 63-yard fumble return by Nick Hopper (Shelby, NC).

Catawba ran for 211 yards on the day, led by the league’s leading rusher, Rodney Wallace (Bamberg, SC), who had 98 yards on 22 carries.  Samples added 68 yards on the ground and completed 23-of-30 passes for a career-high 297 yards and three scores.  Means caught eight of the passes for 114 yards and moved his career reception total to 158, surpassing the old mark of 156 set by Jeff Park from 1990-93.

Wingate got 61 yards on the ground from Antonio Hailstock (Greenville, SC), while Card passed for 163 yards on 12-of-29 completions.  Williams also went over 100 yards in receiving as he caught eight balls for 125 yards.  The fumble by reserve quarterback Brandon Boone (Boiling Springs, NC) was the only turnover on the day.  Catawba controlled possession for the game, 36:24 to just 23:36 for Wingate.
