Second-Half Surge Leads Newberry to Win Over Women's Basketball
NEWBERRY, SC -- Neicey Lewis scored 16 of her 20 points after halftime to help power Newberry past Catawba College Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena. The Lady Indians fall to 17-9 overall and 12-6 in the SAC as the Wolves better their record to 15-11 and 10-8.
Down 39-25 after a three by Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/Namur HS) just three minutes into the second half, the Wolves used a 41-21 run fueled by Lewis and Emily Perry to run past the visiting Lady Indians.
There was a five-minute stretch where Perry hit three from long range and her last at 10:10 moved Newberry to within 45-42. Perry was 4-of-7 from downtown on the day as she scored 14. The Wolves would take over the lead three minutes later on an Ellie Gleeson layup.
A Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day HS) layup and Taylor May (China Grove, NC/S. Rowan HS) three-pointer would give Catawba a short-lived lead at 53-49 with 4:15 remaining but Newberry went on an 8-0 spurt to erase that. A layup by Lewis at the 1:48 mark gave the Wolves a 57-53 advantage.
Newberry then hit 9-of-10 free throws, six by Lewis, in the last 1:17 to ice the game.
Bully and Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day HS) both contributed 17 points to the Lady Indians’ cause while Hicks scored 10 and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Catawba shot 40% in the first half and raced out to a 15-9 lead on a jumper by Renee Welfare (Greenville, SC/Mann/Charleston So.). Bully hit two three-pointers in the first half as she put the Lady Indians ahead by double digits late and led 32-23 at the break.
The loss dropped Catawba in the SAC standings behind Wingate (13-5) which won over Brevard, but a home loss by Tusculum (11-7) to Mars Hill gives the Lady Indians the #2 slot for the conference tournament as they hold the tie-breaker over Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Lady Indians will host a SAC Tournament first-round game against Lincoln Memorial University on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m.
