Underwood Enjoys Perfect Day at the Plate as Baseball Sweeps Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Senior Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) went 7-for-7 over two games as Catawba swept a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader from host Wingate on Saturday afternoon at Christopher Stadium. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 12-11 and 5-2 to improve to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 8-8 and 0-5.
Catawba rallied for the win in the wild opener. The Indians scored three in the ninth to take the lead then held on when Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) gunned down the potential tying run at the plate to end the game.
The Indians build an early 5-1 lead, getting solo homers from Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) and Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS). Wingate erased that deficit with a five-run fourth, scoring all its runs with two outs. Casey Allison had a two-run single and Dodson McPherson a two-run double.
Wingate moved ahead 9-5 after six frames only to see the Indians score seven times over the last three innings. Catawba got three in the seventh as Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) led off with homer, while Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) had a RBI-double and Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) a run-scoring single.
The teams traded runs in the eighth, but the Bulldogs made two errors to start the ninth and Catawba capitalized. Brooks tied the game on a sacrifice fly then a batter later Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) completed a 4-for-4 game with a go-ahead RBI double. Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) drew a bases loaded walk to give the Indians their last and what proved to be important run.
James Tedder started the Bulldog ninth with a walk and pinch runner Will Sapp went to second on a wild pitch with one out. He scored on a double by Allison, who went to third on a passed ball. Thomas Spitz hit a fly ball to Bostian in right, who completed a doubled play by throwing out Allison trying to score at the plate to end the game.
Brooks got the win in relief for Catawba, his first decision of the year. Lawson and Bostian followed Underwood with three hits in the game. The Indians out hit Wingate 18 to 11 with each team making three errors. Brian Yeung had three hits for Wingate.
Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) and Ben Currie each put up three scoreless frames to open game two before Catawba broke through in the fourth. The Indians opened the inning with four straight hits and Keaton Hawks’ (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) two-run single started the four-run outburst.
Underwood, who singled home a run in the fourth, added another RBI single in the sixth. Wingate put up a pair of runs in the sixth to cut the margin to 5-2. Spitz tripled and scored on a wild pitch and Yeung singled home a run.
Lomascolo went the distance for Catawba in improving to 2-2. He allowed two runs, one earned, off six hits with a single walk and 10 strikeouts. Underwood went 3-for-3 to complete his perfect day. Brooks added a pair of hits for the Indians.
