Volleyball tied for SAC lead after sweep of Tusculum

SALISBURY, NC Catawba College swept visiting Tusculum in three games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 30-11, 30-19 and 30-17 to pull even with Carson-Newman atop the league standings. Catawba improves to 18-6 overall and 9-1 in the SAC, while the Pioneers fall to 6-19 and 1-9.Catawba rolled to a 30-11 win in game one, then took game two 30-19. Tusculum had rallied from an 0-2 deficit in falling to Wingate in five games on Friday, but Catawba used a five-point run early in the third game to take a 13-6 lead. A kill and a block by Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) pushed the advantage to 19-10. The Lady Indians would hold a comfortable lead the rest of the way, taking a 23-12 lead after back-to-back kills by freshman Summer Zuck (Kingston, TN) and another by freshman Nicole Scheidt (China Grove, NC). Tusculum got within 23-15 on consecutive kills by Rachael Woods (Sherman, IL), but a pair of blocks by Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) put the Lady Indians up 28-15. Hope Miller (Hickory, NC) led Catawba with 15 kills and 18 digs. Zuck tallied 11 kills and had 13 digs and three blocks. Erin Naumann (Cave Creek, AZ) had 27 digs, while Scheidt added 15 assists. Woods led the Pioneers with nine kills, while Sara King (Alpharetta, GA) had 20 digs.
