Men's Lacrosse Rallies Past Belmont Abbey
BELMONT, NC -- Tenth-ranked Catawba rallied from an 11-6 third-quarter deficit to claim a 15-13 win over host Belmont Abbey in men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Catawba Indians improve to 5-0, while the Crusaders fall to 2-2.
The Indians were shutout in the second quarter and trailed 7-4 at the half. Dan Morrissey scored twice for Belmont Abbey in the third quarter to help the Crusaders extend the lead to 11-6 with just over eight minutes left in the quarter. Catawba then scored the final five goals of the period to pull even entering the final 15 minutes.
Morrissey scored twice to open the fourth quarter to give the Crusaders the lead, but Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Stevenson) and the Catawba defense shutout Belmont Abbey for the final 11:16. Trevor Sieracki (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) tied the game for the Indians with 10:46 to play then scored the game-winner at the 6:47 mark. John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC.Weddington HS) scored an insurance goal with 5:54 left.
Sieracki was one of the Indians with three goals on the day. Tom Cullop (New Windsor, MD/S. Carroll HS) scored three goals and added three assists, including one on the game-winner. Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King HS) had three goals and handed out a pair of helpers. Morrissey had five goals for Belmont Abbey.
Catawba jumped to a 2-0 lead and led 4-3 after a quarter. Belmont Abbey would control the second quarter and half of the third before the Indians rallied.
Wesselman played the second half for Catawba, making nine saves and allowing six goals. Michael Pecchia (Coquitlam, BC, CANADA/Heritage Woods HS) was in goal during the first half for the Indians and stopped six shots.
