Beard's Walk-off Single Completes Baseball's Weekend Sweep of Newberry
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got a walk-off single from Cameron Beard (Claremont, NC/Bunker Hill HS) to complete a doubleheader sweep of visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. The 23rd-ranked Catawba Indians won by the scores of 10-2 and 4-3 to improve to 13-4 overall and 8-1 in the SAC. The Wolves fall to 8-11 and 4-5.
Newberry had tied the second game in the top of the seenth on a two-run single by Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, FL), but the Indians came right back to score the winning run with no outs. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) and Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) walked to start the inning and Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) reached on a bunt single to the left of the pitcher’s mound. Beard laced a 0-1 pitch up the middle to bring home the winning run.
The Wolves went on top 1-0 in the fourth as Kevin Rufus (Andrews, SC) snapped a scoreless tie with a leadoff home run. That was one of only two hits allowed by Catawba starter John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.K. Brown HS), who struck out four in his five innings and got a no decision.
Catawba answered the Newberry run, scoring three times with two outs in its fourth. Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) put the Indians on top with a two-run single. Beard later scored on a wild pitch for the 3-1 lead that Newberry eventually erased in the seventh. Andy Vogel (Marietta, GA) and Albert Baur (Philadelphia, PA) singled to start the inning and Josh McElwee (Andrews, SC) sacrificed both runners into scoring position for Sheridan.
The Indians got three hits and four RBI from Satterfield in cruising to the win in the opener. His three-run homer capped a five-run fourth that also included a two-run double from Dula.
Catawba jumped out early as the first six Tribe batters reached, leading to four runs. Newberry got both its runs in the third when Robby Scaggs’ (N. Augusta, SC) chopper to third was mishandled.
Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) allowed just one earned run over six innings to improve to 3-2. He scattered four hits and fanned three. Hawks drove in two runs with two hits and Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) had two hits and scored twice. Wesley Camp (Pelion, SC) had two of the five Newberry hits.
Beard singled as a pinch hitter in the opener then collected three hits in the nightcap. Satterfield and Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) picked up a pair of hits in game two for the Indians.
