SALISBURY, NC -- Host Catawba and 25th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne played to a split of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field. Lenoir-Rhyne took the opener 6-0, while the Catawba Indians held on for a 6-5 victory in game two. Catawba now stands at 17-9 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. The Bears are 19-6 and 1-1.
Tara Gibbs got Catawba off to a quick start in the nightcap, belting a three-run homer in the bottom of the first for the early lead. In the third, Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS) and Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) had RBI singles to up the lead to 5-0. Huneycutt added a solo homer in the fifth for a 6-0 margin.
Murray had cruised through six innings, allowing just two hits, but the Bears rallied in their final at bat. Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, NC) hit a two-run homer, Katie Carpenter (Newton, NC/Bandys HS) a solo shot and Jody Mizelle (Colerain, NC/Bertie HS) a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 6-5. Murray was able to get Carlee Carpenter (Newton, NC/Bandys HS) on a grounder to third to end the game.
Murray improved to 5-7, giving up three earned runs off five hits. She walked three and struck out six. Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, NC/Alexander Central HS) fell to 6-2 as she took the loss for LR. She pitched to only four batters and gave up the dinger to Gibbs.
Murray backed herself with three hits at the plate. Michaela Boyd (Concord, NC/NW Cabarrus HS), Casey Baucom (Marshville, NC/Piedmont HS) and Huneycutt each had two hits as the Lady Indians collected 13 hits in the win. Mizelle had two of the five Bear hits.
Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out in front in the opener on a three-run homer by Fellmeth in the first. A pair of walks had preceded the homer. That was the only hit for the Bears until the fifth when LR had a pair of single, scoring on a hit by Brittany Davidson (Fort Defiance, VA).
Catawba loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but Dewon Millwood (Hixson, TN) got a pop up and a strikeout to keep the shutout in tact. The Bears padded its lead with two more runs in the seventh and again Millwood worked out of a bases loaded jam to preserve her fourth shutout and improve to 9-3.
