Solid Pitching Carries Baseball to Sweep of Anderson
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba used consistent efforts on the mound from Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) and John Tuttle (Kannapolis NC/A.L. Brown HS) to complete the series sweep over Anderson winning 4-3 and 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians improve to 18-5 overall and 11-1 in the South Atlantic Conference while the Trojans are 6-19, 2-10.
Lomascolo (4-2) pitched seven full innings scattering eight hits and three earned runs as he picked up the win. Clay Watson (Lexington, NC/N. Davidson HS) and Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) supplied late relief with Brooks getting the save on a line-drive double play to third to end the game.
Anderson took advantage of Lomascolo’s shaky start in the first inning scoring two to take the early lead. The junior left-hander walked two and hit a batter and then gave up a single to left to the Trojan’s Brett Scarberry that manufactured the inning’s only runs.
Catawba gradually clawed its way back scoring a run in each of the next two frames to level the score. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) scored in the second off an Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) ground out while Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) blasted a solo shot to left center in the third.
The Trojans went ahead in the fifth on a Paul Como single that scored Brett Cash. The Indians would answer in the seventh with Bostian singling in Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) and Anderson starting pitcher Landon Beck walking home Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS). The Trojans had just three more hits the rest of the way.
Tuttle (1-1) cruised to the victory in the second contest hurling a complete-game two-hit shutout to pick up the win. He fanned six and walked three on just 81 pitches.
Catawba produced all of the offense it would need in the first inning when Bostian scored on a Zubillaga double down the leftfield line. Zubillaga would later score on a one-out fielder’s choice play from Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS).
Anderson starter Erick Sanderson took the loss although he pitched a complete-game eight-hitter with one walk.
Bostian, Zubillaga and Underwood each had three hits for the Indians on the day as Bostian and Satterfield had two RBI’s apiece.
The Indians host Kutztown, PA on Monday afternoon, Mar. 12 at 2 p.m.
