Pitching Dominant as Baseball Takes Double-Header at Brevard

BREVARD, NC -- JJ Jankowski (McMurray, PA/Peters Township HS/Miami, OH) and Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) combined for 20 strikeouts and allowed 6 total hits as #15 Catawba grabbed a pair of wins 7-1 and 7-0 from Brevard Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. The Indians up their mark to 21-5 overall and 13-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Tornados fall to 14-14 and 7-7.

During game one Jankowski was his usual self striking out 13, walking none and giving up just five hits through seven full innings as he improved to 6-0 on the season. Clay Watson (Lexington, NC/N. Davidson HS) and Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) closed out things for the Indians with each pitching an inning of relief and allowing only one hit.

Catawba put a run on the board quickly in the first frame as Chris Dula’s (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) RBI double to right brought Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) in for the 1-0 advantage.

The Tornados tallied their lone run in the fourth as Zach Merriken singled and later scored on a fielder’ choice play at second.

The Indians finished the scoring in the sixth with Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) and Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) crossing home off a  Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) RBI groundout to third and a Furr single to left.

Zach Joyce (1-3) took the loss for Brevard giving up 10 hits and three earned runs through seven innings of work.

Lomascolo (5-2) starred in game two going the distance in throwing a one-hit shutout while striking out seven with just one base on balls.

Catawba again notched a run in the first when Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) scored off a Furr double to right field. It proved to be all the run support Lomascolo would need as he stayed strong throughout the afternoon.

A landslide of offense would come for the Indians in the fourth as they put five more on the board with five hits and two Tornado errors. Lawson highlighted the frame leading it off with a solo shot to left center.

Right-hander Casey Smith (1-2) had the loss for the Tornados allowing three earned runs on 11 hits and walking three. Cody Queen was the only Tornado to have a hit in both games off Indian pitchers.

Furr put on a hitting display going 5-for-9 with three RBI on the day for Catawba. Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) also had a productive day as well with two hits and three RBI.

The Indians host the Barton Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon, Mar. 20 at 3 p.m.
