Softball Sweeps Brevard With a Pair of Shutouts
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba shutout Brevard twice in sweeping both games of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 1-0 and 6-0 to improve to 24-10 overall and 5-1 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 14-16 and 3-5.
Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) out-dueled Brevard’s Kayla Clemens (Sebring, FL) to win the opener. Huneycutt, now 12-3, allowed four hits and walked one while striking out one. She worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth, the only frame where Brevard got a runner past first.
Clemens also allowed just four hits, but one was a leadoff home run by Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS) to start the Catawba fifth. That lone run held up for the win. Clemens walked two and fanned two.
Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) won game two for Catawba, allowed two hits over her five innings. She improved to 9-7, walking one and recording two strikeouts. Murray missed game one, getting stitches after being hit over the eye in warm-ups. Selena Ashley (Walkertown, NC/E. Forsyth HS) finished up the final two frames with hitless relief. She walked one and struck out one.
Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS) provided the early offense on a three-run homer with two-outs in the first. Kelsey Burgess (Charlotte, NC/Gaston Christian HS/N. Greenville) led off the third with a home run and Alycia Stiles (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area HS) hit a solo shot in the fifth to cap the scoring.
Stiles had two hits in game two, the only player on either team with a multi-hit game in either game. Stiles also had a hit in game one. Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) and Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) had a hit in each game for the Lady Indians. Chelsi Mallory (Mechanicsville, VA) had a hit in each game for Brevard.
