Women's Lacrosse Gets Five Goals From Kavanagh in Loss at Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Nikki Colwell scored eight goals to lead host Newberry past Catawba 18-12 in women's lacrosse action on Friday night at Setzler Field. The battle of first-year programs leaves the Wolves at 2-5, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-6.
Kortney Kavanagh (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River HS) scored five goals to pace Catawba. Chelsey Ferraro (Tampa, FL/Plant HS) added a pair of goals for the Lady Indians, while Ebony Mills (Harrison, ME/Oxford Hills HS/Mount Ida) had a goal and two assists.
Colwell had a pair of goals early in the first half to erase a 2-1 deficit and start a seven-goal run by the Wolves. After Newberry opened the scoring, Catawba came back on goals by Myra Clark (Newark, DE/Glasgow HS/Cecil CC) and Kavanagh to lead 2-1 five and half minutes into the game.
The Wolves took control over the next 10 minutes with those seven unanswered goals for an 8-2 lead midway through the half. Newberry built its lead to 11-3 late in the half, before Catawba made a run to trim the deficit to 11-6 by the break. Kavanagh added two more goals in the final 1:25 to help the Lady Indians close the gap.
The Wolves got out of the gates quickly in the second half with five goals to open the final period. Colwell had the final three to up the margin to 16-6 with just over 20 minutes to play.
Kristen Stensholt added three goals and an assists for Newberry, while Tessa Davis also had three goals. Catawba held a 30-25 edge in shots. Alex Hatch had a seven saves for Newberry.
