Baseball Waits Out Rain Then Tops LR 5-3 in Series Opener
HICKORY, NC -- Catawba opened its weekend series against Lenoir-Rhyne with a 5-3 win in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Bears Field. Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) had three hits to pace the fifth-ranked Catawba Indians, who improve to 24-7 and 15-1. The Bears fall to 9-24 and 5-11.
The game was delayed at the start for about two and half hours and Satterfield scored the first run after he led off the second with a single. He stole second with two outs and scored on a single by Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS). The Indians added another run in the third as Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) brought home Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat), who led off with a triple.
Lenoir-Rhyne cut the lead in half in the fifth on a two-out infield single with the bases loaded by Rai Robinson. Catawba got that run right back in the sixth as Satterfield led off with a double and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS).
The Bears again pulled within a run in the seventh. Striking again with two out on a single by Ivan Vieitez. Nate King (Vancouver, WA/Skyview HS/NC State) worked out of further trouble and Catawba added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth off a LR error.
The bonus runs proved valuable as Lenoir-Rhyne scored once in the ninth and had the tying runs on base, but John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) got Vieitez to fly out and Robinson on a strikeout to end the game. It was his second save of the season.
Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) got the start for Catawba. He worked five innings, allowing one run off five hits. Whitley (5-2) walked three and fanned six.
Satterfield had three of the eight Catawba hits and scored twice. Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) had two hits and got the ninth inning rally started with an infield single with one out.
Stephan Arcieri had three hits to pace the Bears. Mike Gasque had two hits and scored twice, while Mike Mastroberti also had two hits. Christian Hicks (1-3) took the loss for the Bears. He allowed three runs off seven hits over seven and a third innings. He walked six and struck out a dozen.
