SALISBURY, NC -- JJ Jankowski (McMurray, PA/Peters Township HS/Miami, OH) sailed through another performance striking out 11 and giving up just one earned run on six hits as Catawba College got the better of Carson-Newman 9-1 Friday night at Newman Park. The Indians go to 27-7 overall and 18-1 in the SAC while the Eagles fall to 18-19 and 9-10.

Jankowski (8-0) allowed a lead-off hit to the Eagles’ Phillip Duncan and then struck the next batter. The latter would set the tone for the rest of the evening. Carson-Newman would not score until the top of the ninth inning after the senior pitcher had thrown over 100 pitches.

Catawba quickly gave its man on the mound some run support in the first when an Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) double plated Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) and Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS).

Losing pitcher Lucas Watson lasted just three innings for the Eagles giving up seven earned runs on six hits. The third inning done Watson in as Catawba hit him up for four runs on four hits while the Carson-Newman defense committed an error.

Satterfield started the onslaught in the Catawba third with a single that scored Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) from second. After an out the Indians produced two singles and a double that each netted one run to close out the scoring and put them ahead 7-0.

Dula launched a Carson-Newman offering over the left field wall in the fourth for his seventh of the year. Satterfield singled later on for his third hit of the night which led the team.

The Eagles would get on the scoreboard in the final frame when first baseman Kyle Koeneman led off with a double to center and later scored on a fielder’s choice to first. Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) came in to relieve Jankowski in the ninth and recorded the final two outs for Catawba.

Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) and Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) collected two hits apiece to help the Indian cause.

Catawba continues its weekend series with the Eagles Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
