Ridolfo Nets Overtime Winner for Men's Lacrosse in Thriller Over Rollins
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba claimed a dramatic 9-8 overtime win over visiting Rollins in Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse action on Friday night at Shuford Stadium on Steven Ridolfo’s (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Gettysburg) goal 11 seconds into the extra time. With the win, the Catawba Indians improve to 9-2 overall and 4-2 in the DSC, while the Tars fall to 3-10 and 1-5.
Catawba never led until overtime when the Indians’ Tom Cullop (New Windsor, MD/S. Carroll HS) picked up the ground ball on Daniel Couchenhour’s (Fort Mill, SC/Nation Ford HS) face-off win then hit Ridolfo near the goal for the winner. Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King HS) had two goals in the final 1:34 of regulation to force the extra period.
Artem cut the deficit to 8-7 with 1:34 remaining then tied the game with 39 seconds to go. After falling behind 2-0 in the opening quarter, Catawba had cut the lead to a single goal five times before Artem was able to pull the Indians level.
Peter Harvey (Princeton, NJ) put the Tars in front 12 seconds into the contest as he won the opening face-off and went straight to goal. Will Diamond (Delray Beach, FL) scored a pair of goals in the second quarter to help Rollins to a 4-2 edge at the half.
Down 5-2, Artem scored twice to get the Indians to within 5-4 at the end of the third quarter. Rollins then surged back to start the fourth with two goals in a span of a minute and half for a 7-4 edge. Catawba scored twice in 30 seconds to get within 7-6 with 7:19 to go on Ridolfo’s first tally of the game. Rollins answered back with a man-up goal from Stephen DeFlumeri (Shrewsbury, MA) at the 6:48 mark, setting the stage for the late match heroics by the Indians.
Artem scored four goals and had an assist for the Indians. Ridolfo and Cullop each scored twice. Diamond and DeFlumeri had two goals for Rollins.
Andrew Sherrin (Huntington, NY) stopped 10 Catawba shots in goal for the Tars. Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Stevenson) relieved Michael Pecchia (Coquitlam, BC, CANADA/Heritage Woods HS) at the half and posted six saves. Pecchia, returning from an injury, had seven saves in the first half.
The game was evenly played with Rollins holding a narrow edge in shots (37-35) and ground balls (32-31). The Indians won 12-of-21 face-offs, including the final four. Both teams converted twice on man-up opportunities.
