Tennis Splits with Brevard

BREVARD, NC -- Catawba College men’s tennis team downed Brevard College 5-4 and the women were defeated 6-3 by the Tornados Monday afternoon at the McCoy Tennis Complex. The men improve to 16-8 overall and 4-5 in the South Atlantic Conference while the Lady Indians complete their season at 9-14 and 1-8.

In men’s doubles, the #2 team of Alex MacDonald (Lowen Hutt, NEW ZEALAND/Hutt International HS) and Matthew Nicholson (Chawara, ZIMBABWE/Lomabundi HS) were the lone winners 8-3 over Rory Northam and Jonathon Lavelle.

In singles action Thomas Mitchell (Nanaimo, BC, CANADA/Pendleton School) won a lengthy match at #2 against Brevard’s Beau Wills 6-7, 7-5 and 7-5. Catawba also picked up victories from Matthew Nicholson (Chawara, ZIMBABWE/Lomabundi HS), Uri Yarkoni (Kelowna, BC, CANADA/Okanagan HS) and Kevin Budrawich (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan HS) to steal the win from the Tornados.

For the women, freshman Sloan Kessler (Onalaska, WI/La Crosse Aquinas HS) captured a win at #1 singles 7-6, 6-7 and 10-7 over Lindsay Hostetter. Steffi Cook (Alpharetta, GA/Milton HS) won 6-4, 6-1 at #4 while Olivia Myers (Lexington, NC/W. Davidson HS) grabbed a victory at #6 6-2, 6-2.

The Lady Indians were swept in doubles play but Candace Hall (Denver, NC/E. Lincoln HS) and Hannah Kovach (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) put up a fight at #3 losing 8-5 to Elise Labus and Ana Drummond.

The Catawba men round out their season when they take on Barton College at home on Apr. 10 at 3 p.m.
