Baseball Power-Hits Its Way to Win over St. Andrews
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba blasted six extra-base hits including three home runs to help the Indians blow past St. Andrews 13-2 in a rain-shortened contest Tuesday night at Newman Park. The Indians now stand at 29-8 overall and the Knights are 9-27.
Home runs from Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) in the first inning and Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) in the second started the Indian assault on Knight pitchers. Losing hurler Travis Holland lasted just three and a third while giving up seven earned runs on six hits and walking four for St. Andrews.
The Knights knotted the score at two in the third when Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) gave up four straight hits that scored Kyle Schade and Chris Constantin. Whitley (6-2) would settle down only giving up two more hits during his six innings of work to take the win for the Indians.
Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) broke open the game in the Catawba fourth with a three-run dinger to left center that plated Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) and Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS).
Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) highlighted a six-run sixth with a two-RBI triple off Knights’ reliever Ryan Pierce that brought in Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) and Beard to give Catawba an insurmountable lead.
The game was postponed for lightning in the bottom of the seventh and later called due to unrelenting rain.
Bostian and Dula both had two hits and two RBI apiece to lead the Catawba hitting attack on the night.
Catawba hosts the Barton Bulldogs Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
