CLINTON, SC -- Catawba College got goals by three different players and defeated host Presbyterian 3-1 and earn a share of the 2002 South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer title. The Lady Indians improve to 11-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the SAC while the Blue Hose drop to 11-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the SAC. Tusculum also finished at 5-1-1 in the league and played to a 2-2 tie with Catawba. The Lady Indians also shared the league crown in 1993 with Elon. The Lady Indians got things going quickly in the match as junior forward Jamie Fink (Woodbridge, VA) broke through the Blue Hose defense, raced toward the goal, and fired a shot into the net past PC junior goalkeeper Aimee Tatom (Irving, TX) to give Catawba a 1-0 lead in the second minute of the match. Three minutes later freshman forward Kyley Thompson (Hagerstown, MD) took a pass from senior midfielder Charlsie Downing (Bloomington, IL) and scored to give the Lady Indians a 2-0 lead. The Blue Hose got to within a goal late in the first half when senior midfielder Jessi Adair (Decatur, GA) converted on a penalty kick. The Blue Hose out shot the Lady Indians 9-5 and led in corner kicks 4-3, but throughout the night senior goalkeeper Kim Clayton (Haw River, NC) made stops when she had to and finished the evening with three saves. Catawba put an exclamation point on the match in the 54th minute when freshman forward Maran Bock (Avondale, AZ) sliced through the PC defense and put a shot in to give the Lady Indians the two goal lead. Catawba will earn the #2-seed in the league tournament which opens on Nov. 6 and will host Mars Hill. The Lady Indians have two non-conference matches before the tournament.
