Gibbs' Walkoff Homer Gets Softball a Split With Mars Hill

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rallied late in game two to salvage a split of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader with visiting Mars Hill on Friday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Lions won the opener 2-1 with the Catawba Indians claiming the nightcap 6-5.  The Lady Indians stand at 28-15 overall and 8-5 in the SAC, while Mars Hill is 21-19 and 6-8.

Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) capped a five-run rally with a walkoff home run for Catawba in game two.  Gibbs’ blast, her 12th of the season, came with one out.  Gibbs finished with two hits in each game for the Lady Indians.

Natalie Haithcox (Asheboro, NC) helped the Lions to an early lead with a pair of home runs in the first three innings.  She had a leadoff home run in the second then followed a two-out, two-run double by Robyn Stanek (Winston-Salem, NC) in the third with a two-run homer.

Catawba battled back to tie the game by the end of the fifth.  Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS) hit a home run to lead off the fourth then the Lady Indians put up four in the fifth.  Catawba opened the frame with singles from Michaela Boyd (Concord, NC/NW Cabarrus HS), Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS) and Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS).  Gibbs and Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS) drew walks to force in runs, while Hyder scored on a wild pitch.  Catawba got the tying run on a two-out error.

Terry and Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) joined Gibbs with two hits in the nightcap.  Terry had tripled in the opener.  Stanek delivered three his for the Lions in the second game.  Haithcox had the two homers.

Mars Hill took the opener, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.  Stephanie McGrath (Thurmont, MD) got things started with a one-out bunt single.  The Lions got runners at second third when Stanek reached on an error.  Mars Hill scored the tying run on a bloop single over first base by Haithcox and went ahead on a sacrifice fly by Shaundee Woosley (Lexington, NC).

The lone Catawba run came in the second after Gibbs and Justice led off the frame with singles.  After being sacrificed up a base, Gibbs came across the plate on a two-out wild pitch.

Taylor Morris (Weddington, NC) got the win for the Lions, striking out the side in the seventh.  She allowed a run on four hits in recording the complete game win.  Morris walked none and fanned eight.  She took the loss in game two in relief, leaving her with a 12-12 mark on the year.

Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) was the tough-luck loser in game one for the Lady Indians.  She allowed the two unearned runs off four hits with no walks and three strikeouts.  The senior came back to get the win in relief in game two with a pair of shutout innings to improve to 12-9.
