Baseball Splits Twin Bill with Tusculum
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Catawba got the better of Tusculum in the first game of a doubleheader 6-4 but the Pioneers stormed back with a 12-2 victory over the Indians in the second Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park. The Indians move to 31-10 overall and 20-4 in the South Atlantic Conference as the Pioneers take over first place in the SAC at 21-3 and are 34-6 overall.
Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) had a gutsy performance in game one scattering eight hits and giving up only two earned runs over nine innings. The junior left-hander threw 142 pitches and walked four to improve to 8-3.
The Indians produced four hits and two runs off Tusculum starter Adam Sigmon in the second frame. Sigmon wound up taking his first loss of the season after five straight wins. He gave up four runs on eight hits and two walks through six innings.
Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) led off the inning with his first of three hits on the day, singling to right. A Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) double moved Satterfield to third and then he scored on a throwing error by Lukas Graves. Beard later came in for the second run on a Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) single to left.
The Pioneers answered with one run in the second inning and two in the third to go ahead of the Indians 3-2. Cody Coffman scored on a sacrifice fly in the second and then Aaron Guinn and Graves came home after two Tusculum singles in the third.
Catawba surged in front 4-3 with two more runs in the fifth inning. Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) doubled in Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) and Furr later scored on a wild pitch.
Lomascolo was sharp in the middle three innings allowing just one hit in each as no Pioneer base runner advanced past first base.
Both teams added a run in the seventh, but Catawba scored an insurance run in the eighth for some breathing room. Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) was able to score on a Brooks’ groundout to Pioneer shortstop Tripper Crisson for the two-run lead.
Lomascolo then got Tusculum to go quietly in the final frame as he sat down all three batters in a row to end it.
Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) had two hits and scored a run for the Indians. Cade Stallings led the Pioneers with three hits and an RBI.
Tusculum broke open a 3-2 game in the fifth inning scoring five runs and adding four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) (2-2) lasted only four innings giving up three earned runs on five hits with two walks and three wild pitches. His counterpart, Taylor Rakes, went the distance allowing two runs on five hits and struck out six.
A throwing and fielding error by the Indians in the fifth scored three unearned runs as the Pioneers also collected four hits between Tuttle and reliever Nate King (Vancouver, WA/Skyview HS/NC State).
Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) closed out the fifth for Catawba but didn’t fare well in the sixth as Tusculum got him for four runs on three hits. Second baseman Matt Henriksen hit a three-run home run to left with two-out off Whitley to seal it for the Pioneers.
Satterfield scored off a Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) sacrifice fly in the second inning to tie it at one run apiece. The Indians would not score again until Dula knocked out a solo homer to left in the sixth to make it 8-2.
Satterfield was the only Indian to have multiple hits with two and also scored a run. Four different players had two hits for Tusculum.
Catawba hosts Wingate in non-conference game Tuesday, Apr. 10 at 5p.m.
