SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba defeated Wingate 5-4 when Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the tenth inning Tuesday night at Newman Park. The Indians improve to 32-10 overall as the Bulldogs drop to 26-20.

Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) was two-for-five with a double and an RBI to lead the Catawba attack. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) went two-for-four with a double and two runs scored, while Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) had a double and an RBI for the Indians.

Junior designated hitter Jason Hunter was three-for-four with a double and a run scored to lead Wingate’s attack. Freshman infielder Michael Godinez went three-for-five with a double, RBI and two runs scored, while senior outfielder Casey Allison added a pair of hits, including a homer for the Bulldogs.

Catawba wasted little time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Ethan Satterfield’s (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) RBI single. A wild pitch, followed by an RBI double from Bostian gave the Indians a 3-0 lead in the fourth.

Wingate got on the board in the fifth, plating two runs. Hunter led off the frame with a single, then scored on an RBI double from Godinez. An RBI single from senior infielder Jacob Karr made it 3-2.

Beard answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame, pushing the lead back to two.

The Bulldogs had an answer, cutting the lead to one in the seventh. Godinez singled to start the frame, then moved to second on a sacrifice. He scored on an RBI single from senior outfielder Dodson McPherson, making it 4-3.

Wingate tied it in the eighth, when Allison connected on his 16th homer of the year, a solo shot to make it 4-4.

The game would then go to extras. Wingate was unable to score in the top of the tenth frame.

Dula started the tenth inning with a single to left for the Indians. Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) and Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) both intentionally walked to load the bases with one out setting up Hawks’ at bat.

Clay Watson got the win for Catawba, improving to 2-0. He tossed a scoreless inning, striking out one. Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) pitched a solid seven innings allowing three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out 10.

Junior right-hander Justin Somers took the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed one run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings of work, striking out four while walking two.

The Indians entertain USC Aiken in a non-conference game Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
