Baseball Outscores LMU to Pick up Victory

HARROGATE, TN -- Catawba and Lincoln Memorial University combined for 27 runs on 34 hits in a wild South Atlantic Conference tilt Friday night at Hennon Field with the Indians coming out on top 16-11. Catawba improves to 34-10 overall and 21-4 in the SAC while the Railsplitters fall to 21-26 and 10-15.

Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) had three hits, four RBI and scored two runs while Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) netted four hits with four RBI and two runs scored to help lead the Indians.

Clay Watson (Lexington, NC/N. Davidson HS) wound up with the win for Catawba going three-and-two-thirds innings while giving up four runs on eight hits. He improved to 3-0 on the season.

With two outs in the second inning Catawba got a double from Lawson, which scored Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS), and a single from Hawks that plated Lawson for the early 2-0 lead.

The Railsplitters responded in their half of the second with a walk and three singles to knot it up at two runs apiece.

LMU then exploded for three more in the third frame off Catawba’s JJ Jankowski (McMurray, PA/Peters Township HS/Miami, OH). Jankowski lasted just three-and-a third while giving up five earned runs on six hits with three walks and two hit batters.

After the first two batters were hit by a pitch and walked, Gelson Perez launched an offering over the leftfield wall to put the Railsplitters in front 5-2.

In the fourth inning the Indians wouldn’t be denied as they climbed back into the game with four runs on three hits.

Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) led off with a single, Brooks walked and Lawson sent them both home with a double to left. Hawks followed that with a double of his own that plated Lawson. After LMU took out starting pitcher Brandon Cowan for Andy Fennell, a Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) grounder to shortstop would score Hawks for the go-ahead run and make it 6-5.

LMU tied it in the fifth frame when Perez reached base after being hit by a pitch and then scored on a double from teammate Nick Morabito.

Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) also reached base by getting hit with the ball during the seventh inning and came home on a Lawson single to put Catawba up 7-6.

Catawba blew the game open in the eighth inning off Fennell with seven runs on five hits and two Railsplitter errors. Three singles, a double and a passed ball would each net a run for the Indians before Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) added a two-RBI double to left which made it 14-6.

The battle continued in the bottom of the eighth as the Railsplitters answered with four runs of their own to get within 14-10.

LMU hit five straight singles and scored two runs off Watson and Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) to start the inning. The Railsplitters finished their scoring on a fielder’s choice play and a Morabito double to center.

Catawba added two runs in the ninth with Lincoln Memorial scoring once to set the final score. Brooks closed the game out for the Indians in the final frame.

Fennell took the loss for LMU as he pitched through five innings allowing just two earned runs on seven hits.

Joseph Horsley, Nick Pressley and Perez had three hits each as Perez also knocked in four runs for the Railsplitters.

Catawba continues its weekend series with LMU Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
