Baseball Takes Two from Railsplitters
HARROGATE, TN -- Catawba College pounded out 24 hits on its way to a sweep of Lincoln Memorial University with scores of 10-2 and 9-2 Saturday afternoon at Hennon Field. Catawba betters its record to 36-10 overall and 23-4 in the South Atlantic Conference while the Railsplitters dip to 21-28 and 10-17.
The first game began as a pitchers’ duel with five combined hits through five innings. Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) pitched a solid seven-and-a-third allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out six. The junior improved to 9-3 on the year.
The Indians were held hitless by LMU starting pitcher Brad Pressley through three innings. Pressley (4-5) allowed four earned runs on eight hits in eight innings and threw 153 pitches while walking four batters and hitting two.
Catawba broke through in the sixth frame off Pressley collecting three runs to snap the scoreless draw. Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) reached base on a walk and scored on a wild pitch. Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) and Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) came home after a Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) single to right which made it 3-0.
The Indians jumped on Pressley even more in the eighth inning as they tallied seven more runs to produce a 10-run margin. Six of Catawba’s runs were unearned because of a throwing error on shortstop Joseph Horsley to third that allowed Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) to score. The error was Horsley’s third of the day. Dula hit a two-RBI double to left to round out the inning.
The Railsplitters got on the board in their half of the eighth inning as they scored a couple of runs. Horsley scored on a sacrifice fly from Andre Rodriguez and Nick Pressley singled in Cody Baker to cut the lead to 10-2.
Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) relieved Lomascolo in the eighth inning and closed the game giving up just two hits and a walk.
Catawba put three on the board with two out in the second inning to take an early lead in game two. Hawks led off with a single to left and later scored on a Mario Parisi (Shirley, NY/Longwood HS) hit up the middle. Underwood later singled in both Mario and Danny Parisi (Shirley, NY/Longwood HS).
Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS), Dula and Beard all doubled in the third frame to help the Indians double their lead on the Railsplitters to 6-0.
Winning pitcher John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) shutout LMU bats until the fourth frame when a Nick Morabito single plated Curt Fuqua and Rodriguez to cut the deficit to four runs. Tuttle pitched six-and-a-third innings and allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five to up his record to 4-2.
The Indians added three insurance runs in the sixth inning with doubles by Mario Parisi and Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) and a single by Danny Parisi helping the cause.
Underwood had five hits and two RBI while Furr produced four hits with two RBI for Catawba during the two games.
Robert Stegbauer (0-2) got the loss for LMU as he went just three innings and gave up six runs on nine hits while striking out four. Rodriguez led the Railsplitters with four hits as Morabito had three on the day.
Catawba plays its last game of the season at Newman Park Tuesday night at 6 p.m. versus Belmont Abbey.
