Furr and Underwood's Hitting Propels Baseball past Newberry
FOREST CITY, NC -- Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) and Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) each had four hits as Catawba handled Newberry 14-7 in the elimination bracket of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament Friday afternoon at McNair Field. Catawba betters its record to 38-11 overall while the Wolves go to 19-29.
Underwood also contributed four RBI while Furr scored three times. Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) came through with three hits of his own along with an RBI and a run scored.
For the second game in a row Catawba’s opponent scored first as Newberry’s Albert Baur singled to left off Indian pitcher Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) to bring in Kevin Rufus for a 1-0 first inning lead.
Furr lined a double to left and Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) and Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) each had singles in the second frame to get Catawba into the scoring column. Lawson’s single to right plated Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) and Furr to put the Indians ahead 2-1.
Underwood put the Indians up 3-1 in the fourth inning with a single to right that scored Beard who reached base earlier on a throwing error by third baseman Robby Scaggs. Catawba had the bases juiced when Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) flied out to right field to end the inning.
Newberry netted four runs in the fourth frame to go on top 5-3. Brandon Sheridan and Scaggs scored after a throwing error on Underwood and then Rufus had a two-RBI single to right that brought in Matt Gaine and John Fogarile.
Furr once again doubled in the Catawba fifth inning and later scored on a groundout by Lawson. An Underwood single through the right side would plate Hawks and Beard for a 6-5 Indian advantage.
Fogarile batted in Andy Vogel in the Wolves’ half of the fifth inning and Scaggs later scored on a play at first base that caught Fogarile attempting to steal second as Newberry moved back in front 7-6.
Lomascolo was done for the day after the fifth inning as he gave up three earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. He also had three walks and three wild pitches.
Newberry starting pitcher Wesley Camp left in the sixth inning after giving up three earned runs on eight hits and four walks. The Indians then proceeded to tie it up off a Wolves’ error when Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) scored because of an errant throw by the shortstop Sheridan.
Zubillaga got a big seventh inning started for Catawba on a single to left that brought home Lawson. Satterfield then had a two-RBI single that plated Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) and Underwood. Zubillaga later scored on a passed ball, while Satterfield came home on a throwing error by Gaine, the catcher. Beard doubled in Furr to finish the scoring for the Indians as they went ahead to stay 13-7.
Nate King (Vancouver, WA/Skyview HS/NC State) was the victor on the day for Catawba improving to 3-2 on the season. He threw a perfect two-thirds of an inning to get the Indians through the sixth frame. Jeremy Long took the loss for Newberry giving up four earned runs on five hits in an inning.
Underwood produced his fourth hit of the day in the ninth inning as he doubled in Beard for the final Indian tally.
The Wolves committed five errors during the game, three by Sheridan alone. Rufus and Scaggs had two hits apiece for the Wolves.
Catawba plays the loser of the No. 5 Carson-Newman vs. No. 4 Wingate matchup Saturday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. in Forest City.
