Baseball Knocked Out of SAC Tourney With Saturday Loss
FOREST CITY, NC -- Carson-Newman claimed a 7-5 win over second-seeded Catawba in an elimination game at the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at McNair Field. The Eagles improve to 26-24 and stay alive to face Wingate in another elimination game Saturday night. The 10th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 38-12.
The Eagles grabbed the early lead on a three-run homer by Kyle Koeneman in the bottom of the first. Philip Duncan and Zach Long had stared the inning with singles that preceded the home run from Koeneman, the SAC Player of the Year.
Chris Armstrong kept Catawba’s bats silent for much of his start. Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) doubled home a run for the Indians in the fourth that brought Catawba within 4-1, but the Eagles answered with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth on a two-out, two-run single by Lance Reed.
Catawba finally got to Armstrong in the eighth. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) tripled home two runs and scored on a ground out by Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS). The Indians got one more run on an error before Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) was retired with runners on the corners.
The Indians got two runners on with walks off reliever Daniel Sharp in the ninth before Carson-Newman turned to Brandon Timmerman with two outs. Timmerman got the save when the Eagles turned Beard’s chopper up the middle into a close force out at second.
Armstrong went seven and a third innings to improve to 4-2. He allowed four runs off six hits and five walks with six strikeouts. Long collected three hits and scored twice for the Eagles. Koeneman had two hits and was walked twice. Reed and Mason Guymon also had two hits.
Dula and Hawks each had two hits for Catawba.
