Furr Keys Baseball's Win Over UNC Pembroke in Push For Regional Bid
PEMBROKE, NC -- Catawba bounced back from an early conference tournament exit to knock off host UNC Pembroke 7-3 in baseball action on Wednesday night at Cox Field. The 14th-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 39-12, while the Braves fall to 29-19. The Indians face a key regional match-up at #17 USC Aiken this weekend. Catawba is ranked fifth in the Southeast Region with the Pacers standing sixth.
Catawba got a big night from Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS), who had three hits, including a two-run homer. Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) also had three hits for the Indians. Nate King (Vancouver, WA/Skyview HS/NC State) pitched into the seventh to improve to 4-2.
Josh Haley greeted King with a leadoff double in the Pembroke first and scored on a groundout by Aaron Parnell to put the Braves up 1-0 after an inning. Catawba pulled even on Ryan Bostian’s (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) sacrifice fly in the third and took the lead in the fourth.
Furr led off the fourth with a double and Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) reached on a bunt single. Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) and Danny Parisi (Shirley, NY/Longwood HS) drove them in with a ground out and a sacrifice fly.
Catawba broke the game open in the sixth with four runs. After a single by Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS), Furr connected on his 10th home run of the season to stretch the lead to 5-1. Three straight hits then produced an RBI from Underwood before Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) singled home the final Indian run.
Pembroke chipped away with single runs in the sixth and seventh, but three Catawba relievers combined for two and third innings of scoreless relief to hold the lead. One of the runs came on a solo homer from Parnell.
King went six and two-thirds innings to gain the win. He allowed three runs, two earned, off six hits with five strikeouts. Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) pitched the ninth, striking out two of the four men he faced.
Zubillaga and Beard each had two hits for Catawba, who got hits from eight spots in the order. Parnell had two of the eight hits for the Braves.
